Festival Details

2010-festival-datesNew Zealand has a strong choral tradition. It springs both from European roots and from the choral traditions of Maori and other Polynesian people whose earlier communal life focussed on choral performance. More on Polynesian Choral…

New Zealand schools also are comparatively experienced in hosting visiting groups from northern hemisphere schools. We are wanting to make more of those visitors choirs.  Schools have developed systems for adapting to the needs of visiting groups, as do the staff of this festival. Our own choirs which have toured in the northern hemisphere have consistently valued the opportunity to meet with other choristers in their home contexts. Our wish is to allow northern hemispheres an opportunity to tour and perform in New Zealand, to meet NZ school choirs here and to meet other northern hemisphere school choirs at the same time.

Festival Schedule

Our plan is for your choristers to have three days, M,T,W, in school with a NZ choir, mostly engaged in rehearsal and performance. We want to spend the another day with the visiting choirs together at a Maori Choral music day when they can learn about Maori Choral art and about each other. Then two days are spent in the the competition in the Cathedral environs in Auckland, singing, recording, competing and learning with as much feedback as our judges can give.  The Finale is on the Saturday night.

The subsequent Sunday through to Friday are then spent in the South Island snow country, touring and singing in quite varied contexts culminating in a concert in Christchurch Cathedral.

Accommodation

Our wish is for you to stay in our schools, hosted in the homes of choristers and students in the schools. We are also preparing an Auckland hotel for visiting choirs to stay in if they prefer or if we can’t find a suitable host school. This may also accommodate staff or booster groups accompanying international groups.
